“Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World.” This is a book that I remember Peg studying with her Ladies Group. We really do live in a Martha World, don’t we? People get so busy. We are driven to accomplish things. We tend to stake our self-worth on what we have accomplished. And yet, in the end, it will all pass away.
Once, at the parish where I work, we had a retreat for the Administrative Staff. In one of our sessions, we talked about learning to “Be” as opposed to “Do”. “Being” instead of getting anxious about “Doing” all the right things, in the right way, at the right time.
At one point, we broke into Small Groups to answer this question: What does the world need from the Body of Christ, who is your parish community? We talked about lots of things the world needs, Hope, Guidance, Truth, Joy… There was quite an extensive list. And great discussion.
But as I saw that we had about five minutes left in our small group’s session, I began to get restless. I wanted to take each of the things we had listed, and figure out how we could teach them, assign people to handle different parts, organize our staff to carry out a mission to empower our parishioners to go evangelize the world. My mind was going full speed. I wanted to write down what we had discussed, make a list, so we could check things off as we accomplished them.
That wasn’t what we had just been taught. We had just heard about “being” the person that God had made us to be. God made us to know, love and serve him. Notice, that there are two requirements in front of the one that is to “serve”.
We are to know Him.
We are to love Him.
So let us go back to the question and give it a little thought. What does the world need from the Body of Christ, who is Corpus Christi Parish? It is a great question to ask ourselves. Especially for our parish that has the honor of being called the Body of Christ – Corpus Christi. First of all, the world needs to know Jesus Christ. For the world to know Jesus Christ, it needs someone to introduce the world to Him. That is our call.
Just like God’s Call to Jonah, we are called to announce God’s message to the world. Just like Jonah, our first response is often to run. I know mine was. We try to bargain with Him, tell Him that he has made a mistake. He can’t really be calling me to do THAT.
But he does call you. And He expects you to answer “yes”. Just try to ignore Him, turn a deaf ear. Try telling Him you’ll wait him out. He can be very patient, after all God “has all the time in the world”.
What is the most important thing that we will have to do to introduce Jesus to the World? We have to know Him. We can’t introduce someone we don’t know.
What do we need to do in order to know Jesus Christ? Asking His mother to tell us about Him is a good way. But we need to spend time with him. Getting to know anyone is as simple as spending time with them. Getting to know Jesus is as simple as spending time with him: in prayer, in the sacraments, in scripture, in adoration.
It is the better part….
"Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her."
