The Catholic Church's social teaching is about building a just society and living lives of holiness in a modern society. The seven themes of this teaching are:
The Social Concerns Committee of Corpus Christi Parish always tries to keep those teachings in mind as activities and projects are planned. The committee welcomes anyone interested in joining and new ideas for projects are always appreciated.
Some of the projects the committee has sponsored in the past that were especially successful and enjoyable were, raising money to build a kitchen in Africa as part of Mary's Meals organization, packaging meals in conjunction with Christ the King Church in Des Moines for the people of Tanzania, and organizing 3 garage sales to create funds to build concrete homes in Haiti.
On a more ongoing basis, parishioners participate in collections at Mother's Day and Father's Day of baby items for Birthright and Gabriel's Corner, collecting school supplies, providing food, clothing, and personal care items for Phoenix House, Micah House, and Open Door Mission, collecting toys and clothing at Christmas for Children's Square, and serving meals at Mohm's Place.
The committee has also encouraged parishioners to bring joy to the families at Micah House by decorating and helping out with monthly children's birthday parties that Jill and John Faust so generously provide for the residents. They entertain with games, crafts, gifts, and ice and cake!
During this past Lent, a note writing weekend was provided after masses for our homebound, nursing home residents, seminarians, and military.
ServeFest is a city-wide project that the committee also promotes. It is a half-day service one weekend in May when are churches join together to provide a service to an organization, a neighborhood, and an individual in need. This event not only provides a service but also an opportunity to demonstrate God's Love.
One program the committee does not sponsor but does assist with is the City-Wide Thanksgiving Dinner. It was started years ago by St. Patrick's Catholic Church and is held at Community Of Christ Church. Corpus Christi and St. Peter's parishioners have happily assisted by supplying part of the food items, meal preparation, and serving.
Plans for the future include providing a "Blessing Basket" in both church locations for people to put trial size personal care items to be given to the folks at Hope Net for distribution at their Sequels locations.
An invitation to join this committee is always open! We welcome anyone with a heart for service and a love for God and mankind. Please complete the form below or call the parish office at (712) 323-2916 if you are interested in joining.
